Opening up conversations this Islamophobia Awareness Month

Islamophobia Awareness Month (IAM) takes place every November to promote understanding and raise awareness of prejudice against the Muslim community both in and out of the workplace. This year, we took the opportunity to spark constructive conversation by gathering questions from our colleagues for our Islamic Connections group to answer!

By creating a safe place for colleagues to ask questions anonymously, dialogue surrounding how to bust stereotypes and promote inclusivity opened up. Questions from our colleagues included how to be a good ally, asked about the challenges and highlights of being a Muslim in the modern world and about media stereotyping.

Our Islamic Connections group shared answers to these questions via our internal Connections Unplugged podcast. It was great to have so many people in the business show interest and engage.

Iqra Babu, Trainee Solicitor, and group member, shared…

“Being a Muslim woman is a huge part of my identity, but one that I’ve felt I’ve had to hide growing up.

Answering the questions posed to the Islamic Connections group about IAM made me feel heard, seen and understood. IAM is a celebration of Muslim identity, and we can all plant ‘seeds of change’ by having open and safe conversations about what it means to be Muslim and dispelling stereotypes. It’s conversations like the ones we’ve been having here at Foot Anstey that remind me how refreshingly human the firm is and how I’m encouraged to bring my whole, authentic self to work.”
