Dan gets stuck in at Welsh Water as a Virtual Trainee

From a young age I've been interested in law, completing my first ever work experience with the Crown Prosecution Service, however, it was a while before I firmly settled on it as a career. I originally studied Marine Biology at the University of Plymouth and did a few surf and snow seasons before I completed my law conversion. Fast forward a few years and I'm now a Trainee Solicitor at Foot Anstey.

A training contract highlight

One of my highlights has been my Virtual Trainee placement with Dŵr Cymru Welsh Water, who I've been working with since I started my training contract. It's a fascinating business and amazing to work within their team and see how much the law impacts and influences how they operate.

The placement has given me a direct understanding of the current legal and commercial issues facing water services in the UK and I've really enjoyed delving deeply into a topic and exploring its complexities. Being able to apply my findings and newfound understanding to provide practical legal advice which considers, not only the legal implications for the client, but also the commercial realities has been deeply satisfying.

The highlight has been completing an in-depth research task which involved considering the implications for water drainage liability. This required reviewing case law from as far back as the 1800's and was a fantastic opportunity to gain an in-depth understanding of the history of, and current regulations governing, the water industry.

Unexpected benefits

I've been able to improve my legal knowledge on a diverse range of topics, but also significantly developed my understanding of the commercial considerations facing clients. This has aided me in my ambition to become a balanced, versatile, and well-rounded lawyer. I don't think I would have been able to do this on the same level without this programme.

It is a brilliant opportunity to explore an area of interest and to be involved in a broad range of matters outside of your day-to-day role. I've also found, through balancing my seat and the virtual trainee role, I've developed key time management and task prioritisation skills which are an essential part of being a lawyer and will continue to be beneficial throughout my career.

Dan undertook his GDL with ULaw before doing his LPC and starting his Training Contract at Foot Anstey in 2023.
